What should I do if my tooth is aching?

A toothache can be both uncomfortable and concerning, but knowing how to respond appropriately can help manage your pain and protect your oral health. We recommend taking immediate action when you experience tooth pain, as early intervention often leads to better outcomes.

Stay Calm and Contact Us

The first step is to contact our Bayswater dental surgery as soon as possible to arrange an appointment. Tooth pain rarely resolves on its own and typically indicates an underlying issue that requires professional attention. Dr Fine and our team prioritise emergency appointments to ensure you receive prompt care when you're experiencing discomfort.

While waiting for your appointment, these steps can help manage your pain:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief — Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation, but follow instructions carefully for dosage
  • Cold compress — Hold an ice pack against your cheek for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling and numb the pain
  • Warm salt water rinse — Mix half a teaspoon of salt in warm water and gently swish and spit to help reduce bacteria and inflammation
  • Avoid extreme temperatures — Stay away from very hot or cold foods and drinks that might trigger additional pain
  • Keep your head elevated — Sleep with your head slightly raised to reduce blood flow to the affected area

Don't Wait to Contact Your Emergency Dentist in Bayswater

Never ignore persistent tooth pain or attempt to treat serious dental issues at home. Contact our friendly team immediately if you experience severe pain, facial swelling, or fever, as these symptoms may indicate a severe infection that requires urgent treatment.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
