Your baby's first tooth is a big milestone! Between teething, new foods and learning to brush, there's plenty happening in those early years. But when should you introduce your little one to the dentist?
What Age Should Children First See a Dentist?
The Australian Dental Association recommends scheduling your child's first dental visit when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Early appointments allow your dentist to:
- Check tooth development
- Assess oral health
- Provide advice about caring for baby teeth
Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they play important roles in chewing, speaking and maintaining space for permanent teeth.
What Happens at a Child's First Dental Appointment?
Your dentist will tailor the appointment to your child's age and comfort level. For babies and toddlers, this may involve a brief exam of the teeth and gums, along with a conversation about brushing, fluoride toothpaste, feeding habits and teething.
Some children are curious and happy to open wide, while others prefer to observe before participating. Both responses are normal!
How Can Parents Help Children Feel Comfortable?
Talk positively about dental visits and explain what might happen using simple, reassuring language. Reading a story about visiting the dentist or practising opening wide at home may also help.
At Bayswater Family Dental, Dr Russell Fine aims to make appointments welcoming and informative for children and parents.
